Accessible, respectful and experienced coaching is my commitment to you. My approach is simply, I train each person as an individual. Clients benefit from a focus on core strength, body composition, and sound nutrition. I enjoy and have experience training all fitness levels from beginner to elite athletes. I am a life-long student of sport, exercise, body mechanics and nutrition. I believe in an individualistic approach to program design and my goal is to make every journey a fun, exciting, and successful endeavor for each client.
I have been personal training clients for 15 years and find it very rewarding to show and teach others the benefits of a healthy, active lifestyle. I work with persons rehabbing from injury and illness, those trying to simply get back in shape and athletes competing at all levels of endurance sports. I am a true coach at heart. I'm confident you will find my experience and easy going attitude is the approach you've been looking for.
I try to educate clients that regular exercise, both cardio vascular and strength training along with good nutrition and proper rest can lead to a happier, healthier life style. One very important side benefit is a positive mental attitude. I also emphasize that to attain your life style changes, one needs to be consistent, progress slowly and exercise safely.
Al works one on one with personal training clients of all fitness levels, as well as off season strength and conditioning for pro, collegiate and high school athletes.
Al was the head strength and conditioning coach for the Chinese women’s national Olympic basketball team and before that he was the head strength and conditioning coach of the NBA’s Sacramento Kings for 18 seasons and the Monarchs who won the 2005 championship under his training.
I aim to bridge the gap between rehabilitation and fitness. I love pointing people toward becoming independent, pain free and functional according to their specific goals. Whether that's running a local race or climbing stairs after surgery. My training sessions are learning experiences. I expect my clients to ask questions about the program we build together in order to learn how to take control of their health independently.
While my back ground is in injury rehab and Athletic Training, I enjoy working with an elderly population just as much as I do the athletic population. No matter what age we are, we can always be thinking about prevention and the next step toward health and function. My certifications and experience allow me to work with special populations and disease management (orthopedic and neurological). I am also trained in program building for strength and agility. I am a teacher by nature and enjoy educating my client about their bodies.

Move well. Be well. Play well. Perform well. It may sound cliché but I believe everybody is an athlete. Whether you are an everyday athlete moving your way through work and life, or whether you are a sport specific athlete, life is better for you when you move well. I’m committed to helping my clients move better, feel better and perform better.
I have been in the fitness industry for 25 years, and have worked with numerous organizations, ranging from the YMCA, UCSF – Community Healthy Activity Model Project for Seniors and the Stanford Center for Research in Disease Prevention to Technogym and TRX. I have devoted my career to delivering, managing and consulting on personal training, small group personal training and health/wellness services. I continue to study integrated movement and seek to improve lives through coaching physical activity and healthy lifestyles.
I believe that “healthy” is not a number on a scale, or a number on your jeans. It’s not a “strict diet” of no carbs, no fat, no fun…but it is a balance of moderation. “Healthy” is also trying new things that challenge both your body and mind, while having a positive attitude and outlook on life. As a trainer, my goal is to help my clients find a balance in their own lives to incorporate fitness and fun (because- fitness CAN be fun!). My job as a trainer is to keep my clients accountable. I take pride in watching my clients hit their goals- whether it’s increasing their cardio endurance to run their first 5K, gaining strength in areas they didn’t think was possible, fitting into those “skinny” jeans post pregnancy, or just sticking to a routine that they never had done before. All are goals- big or small and I take pride in helping everyone hit those milestones!
I have a passion for coaching any person who is willing to improve their lifestyle and who wants to celebrate the gains they have accomplished.
Fit is not a destination, it’s a way of life.

I believe food is the ultimate medicine, and an adequate knowledge of nutrition is key for optimal health. Through the knowledge of proper nutrition, we can protect ourselves from preventable chronic diseases and lower the risks of our future generations from developing them as well. Cardiovascular disease, diabetes, inflammatory bowel disease, skin conditions, and many other chronic diseases can be healed through proper nutrition. I also believe that every client is entitled to an individualized nutrition consultation to adapt to each of their needs and wants. Not everyone is the same, nor do they eat the same foods. I understand the cultural and social aspects of food, which means that I will help you continue to eat the foods that you enjoy. Healthy food does not have to be tasteless and boring. I can help every client develop recipes that bring life and flavor back to all of their healthy home-cooked meals, while keeping them nutritious and health promoting. Through the proper knowledge of nutrition and physical exercise, I believe we can become powerful.
I have worked with many different people, with varying conditions and needs for the past few years as a private consultant. I have extensive knowledge of nutrition requirements for infants & children, women & men, people over the age of 65, and women who are expecting. I am comfortable working with anyone who wants improve their nutritional status, and/or anyone who just wants to learn about how the human body works.
